New Frame Option: Color Box!

I’ve been working hard for the last few months on developing a super-special frame option. It’s finally ready to go, and it is freaking gorgeous, if I do say so my darn self! :) I'm calling it the Color Box!

So…what the heck is a Color Box, you ask? Well, I'll tell ya.

First, my work is printed with archival pigment inks on 100% cotton fine art paper. (Per usual.) The paper is then mounted onto a canvas, and encased in a 2” deep plexiglass box. The front of the box is clear (of course, haha) and the sides are the color you choose from the options below! The pieces ship ready to hang.

Neon Pink Color Box frame with "Color Cloud 19: A New Thing Is On The Way" on the lower right jumpin' off the screen atcha!

On the wall behind Lisa Congdon (left) is Color Space 40 in an Aqua Color Box! This photo of Lisa and her wife Clay Walsh was taken by the magical Chirstopher Dibble for a Brooks Running campaign!

The overall result is a gorgeous statement piece that absolutely GLOWS (like, legit people have asked me if there is a light source involved!) and which I think you’ll enjoy every darn day.

Any of my pieces can be framed this way, and they look particularly amazing in sets!

I’ve added Color Box frames as an option on just a few pieces for now; I’ll be rolling them out on all of my pieces over time. But for now, get in touch anytime at jessica@jessicapoundstone.com if you'd like a Color Box frame for one or more of the pieces you’re interested in - I’m happy to make it happen!

Inspired By Elizabeth Dye!

When legendary Portland designer Elizabeth Dye asked if I'd be willing to create a custom Color Cloud piece for her, the answer was OBVIOUSLY yes! ;)

I visited her studio, soaked up the AMAZING vibes, chatted about 1,000 things (Portland-ness, Alexander McQueen, Woody Guthrie and, of course, COLOR) and left completely blown away by Elizabeth's story, her color palette and her GORGEOUS work.

In fact I was SO inspired that I created a BUNCH of new pieces, which have resulted in this mini-collection!

I am so grateful to Elizabeth for agreeing to letting me FAN GIRL THE BLEEP OUT with this!!!

A bit about Dye: Having bravely ditched law school Dye’s been designing clothing since 2005, and wedding dresses specifically since 2010. But in 2020, she started offering something new: color.

In an interview with Portland Monthly, Dye talked wanting to inspire couples to approach their wedding day in a new way…

“Let’s just have some fun...and it can be wild and it can be whatever you want.”

Uh, pretty into that as a motto for like…everything.

I hope you enjoy this glimpse at the collection, along with some pics of Elizabeth’s pieces and some of my snaps from my studio visit. (OMG TULLE IS THE BEST.) See the full collection here!

And I’m telling you: start planning an occasion right now that you can commission and wear one of Elizabeth’s dresses to. It doesn’t have to be for your wedding. It can be wild, and whatever you want.

Jessica Poundstone Rugs Featured in Architectural Digest!

The rugs I designed for Work In Progress LA were featured in Architectural Digest! Writer Alia Akkam says I have a “flair for layering stripes” - I’ll take it!

Jessica Poundstone x Work in Progress

Drawing from the Light and Space movement, Portland, Oregon–based artist Jessica Poundstone’s vivid, digitally conceptualized prints have sparked two graphic rug styles for L.A. design collective Work in Progress—the sibling brand to the agency Denvir Enterprises. The pigment-rich flat weave rugs, available in five colorways across two patterns, illuminate Poundstone’s flair for layering stripes. With an assist from ethical sourcing platform Nomadory, the cotton flooring coverings are sustainably produced in Bhadohi, India, each handwoven and hand-dyed by a third-generation family-owned business. w-i-p.la

Designer Pages Features Jessica Poundstone Rugs

Designer Pages kindly published an article all about my rugs for Work In Progress.

Writer Alicita Rodriguez says, “[Jessica Poundstone’s] work features color infused with emotion. It can be viewed as a digital version of chromoluminarism—except instead of dots, she separates colors into geometric lines.”

Oh my gosh, I love that! Read the article below or over at Designer Pages!

Rugs by Jessica Poundstone for Work in Progress

There's a lot to love about Jessica Poundstone's rugs. They're made of 100% natural fiber (cotton). They're designed by a woman graphic artist. They're available through a queer-owned company. They're hand-woven in India by a third-generation family-owned business. And they are all about color!

Let's start with the artist. Jessica Poundstone is a Portland-based artist who believes "art is part of a self-care practice that changes the way we see, think & feel." Her work features color infused with emotion. It can be viewed as a digital version of chromoluminarism—except instead of dots, she separates colors into geometric lines.

Her bold color combinations translate well into the collection's flatwoven rugs. The fruit-inspired hues create luscious palettes. Avocado is earthy and serene. Wild Cherry is a maximalist fruit salad underfoot. Peach practically drips with sugary spa-like splendor.

Poundstone's creations are offered through Work in Progress, a queer—"as in both gay and weird"—brand founded by Holland Denvir that collaborates with diverse creatives, including women and people of color. According to the WIP website, Denvir wanted to create "a company where the employees and collaborators are representative of the real world." If that ethos hasn't convinced you, Denvir founded Work in Progress because of "no longer wanting to work with a**holes." Cue round of applause.

To create the line of flatweave rugs, Work in Progress partnered with Nomadory, a team that facilitates ethical and transparent fabrication in India and Africa. The handwoven rugs use azo-free dyes, which means they don't contain the main known carcinogenic compounds regulated by the EU. This goes a long way to keeping people happy and healthy at home (or anywhere else).

Jessica Poundstone Interview with Return On Art!

I’ve partnered with Austria-based Return On Art for an exclusive release of four limited-edition Color Cloud pieces! My interview with Return On Art curators was recently published over on their blog — I’m posting it here as well for anyone who’d like a peek behind the curtain of my brain! (Tread carefully, hahaha!)

Hope you enjoy it! There are still some pieces left in the limited edition series - check them out here!

Return On Art INTERVIEW WITH JESSICA POUNDSTONE

Jessica Poundstone’s work is informed by minimalism and experiential ‘light and space’ art movements. Her research into colour sensation led her to, in part, let go of the limitations of working with physical materials and explore the endless possibilities of the digital realm. Fascinated by the meditative qualities of colour fields and their ability to evoke intense emotion, she continues to experiment with their immersive powers and the effect they have when they become part of our everyday environment.

“There is something about immersion in colour that, like music, has the power to deeply move us, and that we can’t really explain. I love exploring that mysterious terrain.” - Jessica Poundstone

Q. Did you always want to be an artist?

A. It took me a while to really claim the title of artist, but when I look back on my life, I can see that I always have been - and always will be - an artist! I grew up loving to draw and paint, and could not get enough of looking at, reading about, and talking about art.

Q. Where does your fascination with colour sensation come from?

A. My experiences with colour sensation work have been mystical. There is something about immersion in colour that, like music, has the power to deeply move us - and that we can’t really explain. I love exploring that mysterious terrain.

JESSICA POUNDSTONE

Let’s Grow, 2021

Q. Your work navigates a delicate balance between digital and physical art - you use digital media to create, with your hands, unique one-of-a-kind pieces - could you take us through your artistic process?

A. My digital work typically starts with a colour or set of colours that I get a craving to work with. The colour or colours might have been inspired by anything - a film, a flower arrangement, a feeling: I am - and have always been - very sensitive to colour, and the visceral experience of it.

From there, as I work on my iPad, I typically get very deep into the process of making a piece, getting into that amazing state of flow. I’ll either start by working on a series I’ve already created, like the Colour Cloud series, or I’ll be in an experimental mood, trying out different structures and shapes and textures.

Sometimes, a piece comes together very quickly. Other times, there are lots of stops and starts and dead ends. But when a piece comes together, I always get a little internal jolt of joy that tells me it has arrived. It’s, again, very mysterious! But I’ve come to trust the process and the feeling of “rightness” when a piece is done.

“Working digitally led me to think different thoughts, feel different feelings, and ultimately make work that felt more true to what I had wanted to be able to express all along, but hadn’t been able to create within the limitations of physical materials.” - Jessica Poundstone

Q. Why do you choose to work within this field of tension between the digital and the physical?

A. It feels more like it chose me! The factors that led me to start experimenting with making work digitally were very practical: I didn’t have dedicated space for a studio, but I always had my phone with me. The touchscreen on my phone just felt like a natural language I could learn to speak. I learned that David Hockney was working this way, so I thought that I could try it too!

Working digitally also offered me completely new processes and options for making images, which led me to think different thoughts, feel different feelings, and ultimately make very different work — work that felt more true to what I had wanted to be able to express in my work all along, but hadn’t been able to create within the limitations of physical materials.

JESSICA POUNDSTONE

Slow It Down, 2021

Edition of 20

€ 450,00

Q. You also work in a variety of other media - you create rugs, paintings, etc. How do these different forms of expression relate to each other? Do you see them as different tools to convey a similar concept or are they something else entirely?

A. They do all relate to each other, for sure. I think of the digital work as a portal that I was able to walk through that changed the way I was able to express myself. Once I was in that new space, the way I could use other mediums changed as well - for the better I think.

Q. How do you think the experience of a painted piece or a high-quality printed piece differs (if at all)?

A. To me it is similar to the difference between watching a movie and watching a play. I can be equally moved by both, but they are different experiences. A painted piece, like a play, is a one-time-never-before-never-again object, and carries that energy and power with it. A high-quality printed piece of an open or limited edition can have just as much resonance, but has a more communal, expansive energy to it. I really love both.

Q. You have stated that, to you, art is part of a self-care practice that changes the way we see, think & feel. Could you elaborate on that? How does art impact your personal life and what would you like it to evoke in the viewer?

A. The objects we choose to live with - whether we choose them carefully or not - affect us. Being deliberate about these choices - and having the privilege of bringing beautiful things into our lives - changes our everyday experience of living. Living with blank walls is completely different from having walls filled with images that are meaningful to us, made by artists who are committed to tapping into a current of beauty, joy, wonder and mystery. It literally changes the energy in a space. I feel so comforted, touched, and cared-for by the artwork I’ve chosen to bring into my home!

“Beautiful things change our everyday experience of living. Images and objects made by artists who are committed to tapping into a current of beauty, joy, wonder and mystery in the world literally change the energy in a space.” - Jessica Poundstone

Q. You have also published a book with your work, could you tell us a bit about that?

A. Years ago, I read something about a person who used Van Gogh paintings as a part of their meditation practice. I wasn’t meditating at the time, but that idea intrigued me. As meditation entered into public conversation in a new and big way and I decided to try it, I remembered that concept of using art to meditate. It occurred to me that my Color Cloud series could be used for that purpose. I really enjoyed it as a way to give me something visual to help me focus, so I decided to make a book so others could try it too!

Q. Your work has been part of several successful collaborations with big brands such as Anthropologie; what does it mean to you as an artist when your pieces are featured on objects for everyday use?

A. It’s an honor to have any piece of my work in people’s homes! I do especially love it when my work is part of someone’s everyday routine, whether it’s a glance at a piece of my art next to the door before they leave the house, or looking at their phone case. I’d love to have art be part of every moment of everyone’s day!

Q. Could you describe your work in three words?

A. Color - Structure - Emotion

Color As Comfort, My Very First Solo Show, Is Up at Rare Device in San Francisco Through January 16!

Color As Comfort, my very first solo show, is now up at Rare Device in San Francisco!

Here’s my artist statement about the show:

“I love that surrounding ourselves with images and objects we love is a way to create our own personal support system of symbols. As we build our collections over many years, each piece — whether it’s a piece of art or a rock from a sidewalk in Paris — has the power to create and store fond memories, good vibes, and positive energy.

My highest hope is that my work — which is primarily about exploring how color can make us feel — will be part of the self-care practice of bringing beauty and meaning into our spaces. I want my work to be a continuous source of joy, playfulness, and meaning for my collectors. Color as comfort.

In addition to showing my fine art prints, I’m also thrilled to share new original works — paintings and art objects I’m calling totems. Both have small footprints and big hearts :)”

It’s so awesome to me that my first show would be at Rare Device. The first time I went to the store was in 2007, which wasn’t so long after Rena Tom, who I “knew” from Flickr, had opened it. It’s been a special, can’t-miss-a-visit-when-I’m-in-SF place to me ever since. I’ve loved watching the magic that Lisa Congdon and now Giselle Gyalzen and Rachel Robertson and team have created. I’m honestly still pinching myself that this is all real and actually happening.

If you are in San Francisco I hope you’ll swing through and experience the magic for yourself - and hopefully enjoy the show!!!

If you’re interested in snagging some work from the show even if you’re not in San Francisco, you can shop the Rare Device website! Thank you team Rare Device!!!!! ✨🙏✨

Jessica Poundstone for UPROOT^D : Gorgeous and Super Functional Pegboards!

Look at these gorgeous pegboards!!!! So honored to have been asked by the UPROOT^D team to collaborate on these, because who doesn't need an arty background for their “I just got home” stuff or their “above the changing table” stuff or their “random bits and bobs” stuff? These make allllll that stuff look rad.

Large Kinetic Styled.jpg

I have been SO IMPRESSED with the love and care and sweat (and let’s face it probably tears but they didn’t let on) the UPROOT^D folks put into making their vision for these a reality - prototyping, trying different art, sanding things down when they didn’t work and trying again until everything met their standards which, y’all, are VERY HIGH.

If you need one of these in your life, head over to the UPROOT^D website and snag it, because there's a limited first run of these! Thanks once again to all the amazing folks involved in this collaboration!

A Limited Edition Print!

I thought I'd dip a toe into the world of limited edition prints, starting off with this one, Color Space 31. It's available now at Saatchi Art, or you can order it directly from me

There's sometimes a moment when I'm making these pictures that everything just comes together and I get a sort of emotional "ping" - part deja vu, part thrill - and then I know it's done. That happened with this one for sure.

Interior Design Rules of Thumb You Should Stick By

I was asked by the editors at Redfin’s blog to contribute to an article about interior design, sharing why I believe art is so important in a space. Here’s what I had to say…

“Without art, your home will always feel like something’s missing! Artwork is also a chance to add something you truly, deeply love to your space. It feels like such a missed opportunity when I see artwork from a big box store in someone’s home: resist the urge, and take your time finding the right thing for your space.

New Work: Color Ideas: Thinking About a Really Fun Day

To paraphrase Audre Lorde, fun and the joy that comes along with it can be “fuel for change.” Let’s give ourselves permission to make fun, have fun — and get energized by fun. Here’s hoping this new piece “Color Ideas: Thinking About a Really Fun Day” can help remind us to go for it!

In the Color Ideas Series I’m doing one of my favorite things: letting my thoughts turn into color relationships and patterns that serve to remind me (and maybe you too!) of an idea that’s worth remembering.
